Wizz Air’s Flying Towards Net Zero 2050 aspirational roadmap is built on scalable, proven levers including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), next generation aircraft, fleet renewal, air traffic reform and operational efficiency. Its delivery depends on coordinated progress across the aviation ecosystem, particularly in scaling SAF supply and modernising European airspace, while maintaining a pragmatic approach to emerging technologies.
Wizz Air supports the aviation industry’s long-term transition towards net-zero emissions. Our transition plan focuses on reducing the carbon intensity of our Scope 1 emissions associated with flight operations through a combination of fleet renewal, operational efficiency improvements and supporting the development of SAF. We also collaborate with industry partners to identify opportunities to support emissions reductions across the broader aviation value chain.
Aviation plays a critical role in global connectivity and economic growth, but decarbonising the sector is complex and influenced by factors beyond our direct control. Key challenges include the limited availability and cost of SAF, the pace of technological development in aircraft and propulsion systems, and the continued evolution of supporting infrastructure. While the aviation industry has established long-term net-zero ambitions, progress depends on the availability of scalable technologies, supportive policy frameworks and wider industry collaboration.
Recognising these realities, Wizz Air adopts a pragmatic transition pathway based on currently available technologies while preparing for future developments.
Jet fuel combustion accounts for more than 90% of Wizz Air’s total greenhouse gas emissions, making Scope 1 emissions from flight operations our principal environmental focus. Progress against our transition plan is measured through clearly defined CO₂ emissions intensity targets, supported by measurable operational performance and transparent reporting.

Flights | Driving Efficiency and Cost Advantage Through Fleet Renewal
In the short term, Wizz Air considers newer-generation aircraft, intra-generational technological advancements and ongoing fleet renewal to be key elements in reducing its Scope 1 carbon emissions. These measures are complemented by operational efficiency initiatives across the business. Wizz Air continues to invest in newer-generation aircraft and engine technology, replacing older aircraft as part of its fleet renewal strategy. This approach has contributed to maintaining one of the youngest fleets in Europe and relatively low CO₂ emissions intensity, according to independent organisations including Cirium, Airline Economics and World Finance.
Further decarbonisation of aviation will depend on continued advances in aircraft and propulsion technologies, together with the wider availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Preparing aircraft to operate with higher SAF blends, beyond the current regulatory limit of 50%, and continued investment in research and development will support further progress across the sector.
Looking beyond 2030, Wizz Air will continue to integrate sustainability considerations into its fleet planning and evaluate next-generation aircraft technologies as they become commercially available. In parallel, dedicated operational teams will continue to identify, implement and monitor fuel efficiency initiatives across the business, supporting further improvements in fuel consumption.
Fuel | Emission Reduction with Sustainable Aviation Fuel
In the medium term, we recognise sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a pivotal element in our decarbonisation strategy. Wizz Air has proactively invested in SAF production, supporting innovative technology pathways and securing offtake agreements. We endorse legislative mandates and aim to power 10 per cent of applicable flights with SAF by 2030. We anticipate that 53 per cent of our Scope 1 emissions reductions will be driven by SAF by 2050, given its potential to reduce lifecycle emissions by at least 65% compared to traditional jet fuel, depending on the feedstock and production method. However, current SAF production levels are limited, and prices remain challenging, particularly for a low-cost business model. To effectively scale SAF production, it is essential to establish a long-term policy framework that promotes SAF adoption.
Additionally, introducing incentives to bridge the price gap between SAF and conventional jet fuel will be crucial.

In the longer term, Wizz Air is committed to exploring various avenues to reduce Scope 1 emissions. These include enhancing operational efficiencies and supporting the modernisation of European airspace. However, our decarbonisation strategy will increasingly rely on advancements in aircraft technology, with a particular emphasis on adhering to the evolving UK and EU SAF blending mandates. Additionally, we remain open to the potential of zero-emissions technologies, such as hydrogen, although we acknowledge the current uncertainties surrounding these innovations; therefore, we have not yet integrated them into our immediate roadmap.
